What Causes Spider Veins + How Do You Treat Them?

What Causes Spider Veins + How Do You Treat Them?

Let’s face it: most of us have insecurities we struggle with and for many, summer can be an anxious-ridden time. The arrival of bikini season and all the exposure that it comes with can put a spotlight on one of the biggest concerns- varicose veins –– also known as spider veins. In our quest to find out how to care for this skin condition, we sat down with two beauty industry experts, Julia Marchevkova and Kerry Yates, to learn their insider secrets on how to treat, prevent and conceal unwanted spider veins.

What are spider veins and what are they caused by?

According to NYC-based facialist and skincare expert Julia Marchevkova, “Varicose veins are a condition in which the veins have trouble pumping blood back to the heart. It can be caused by anything that negatively influencers proper blood circulation that can, over time, cause the appearance of dilated blood vessels. So, it’s important to maintain the integrity of the blood vessel walls. For that, antioxidants are a must. Taking care of the problem early on is critical, as spider veins can become a persistent and debilitating problem with age.”

While spider veins can be caused by a variety of factors, Marchevkova says, “Main influences for spider veins could be excess weight, pregnancy, standing or even sitting for prolonged periods of time, or genetic predisposition. Also, unhealthy diet can play a role by promoting inflammation in the body, as well as a lack of vitamins and minerals, like C, E, selenium, amino acids, collagen, magnesium, zinc, that all function synergistically to maintain healthy veins, organs, and tissues that repair them.”

How can spider veins be treated?

Let's face it, outside of an invasive treatment, there is no topical treatment that can be used to cure Spider Veins. But for daily prevention and to help aid with the appearance of them, Dermelect Vacial Spider Vein Treatment packs a potent blend of botanical extracts and vitamins – many of which Marchevkova enjoys. For optimal care, she says, “Thoroughly massage the cream unto the affected areas stimulate the blood circuation. Arnica and Allantoin are extremely nourishing and highly effective. Horse chestnut has been known to help reduce the look of redness and thin red veins.

Additionally, the formulation is also powered by Aloe Vera which is great for soothing and Ginkgo Biloba, known for its toning qualities. Plus, the hydrating benefits of antioxidant Grape Seed, Sunflower Seed, and Jojoba Oils deliver a high dose of Vitamin E.” Beauty expert and founder of Colour Collective Kerry Yates adds, “The Vacial Spider Vein Treatment is formulated with Phytonine, which I recommend utilizing to help camouflage and alleviate some of that ‘veiny look.’ It’s a miracle ingredient!”

Dry brushing is another secret Marchevkova suggests for prevention and treatment. The ritual, which helps to detox skin, can be done daily and only takes a few minutes. This extra step can either be done alone pre-shower or in conjunction with a nourishing oil after showering. Marchevkova says, “Begin gently dry brushing your feet and move upwards toward your heart to help with blood flow and aid in the reduction of toxic buildup in the body.”

Eating for varicose vein prevention and treatment.Besides an impactful body care routine, a balanced diet should be considered for optimal results, according to Marchevkova. She says, “The best approach to deal with inadequate circulation and weakened blood vessels is a reparative antioxidant-rich diet. Antioxidants help to rebuild and strengthen collagen and amino acids. So, it’s always a great idea to consume fresh berries and either red, orange, or yellow vegetables, along with tons of dark leafy vegetables.”

A dash of cayenne pepper is an easy add-on to any lunch or dinner and can be quite useful in strengthening blood vessels, as well as stimulating metabolism. Also, chocolate lovers can finally rejoice- a little bit of antioxidant-rich dark chocolate is also welcomed. For busy men and women, Marchevkova recommends mixing some collagen powder into your go-to drinks, like coffee, herbal teas or water to round out your diet with essential vitamins and nutrients.

Consider a 360° approach with a few lifestyle changesChanging any lifestyle habits that could promote or worsen the look of varicose veins is important for the long-run, too. Marchevkova says, “Try not to spend prolonged time in the heat of the summer and avoid tight clothes that could exacerbate the condition. I’d recommend avoiding smoking, as it robs your body of oxygen and Vitamin C, which contributes to weaker blood vessels and other skin issues. Be sure to elevate legs at the end of the day and, if possible, during lunch for about 15 minutes to fight gravity and ease any pressure building up within the veins.” You can improve circulation with consistent, low-impact exercise, too, according to Marchevkova. She says, “Even simple walking will do.”

Are there ways to cover spider veins up?Aside from treatment, there are ways to conceal spider veins. Yates says, “If you need immediate support, the Dermelect Redness Rehab Conceal + Correct does an amazing job at concealing spider veins in a pinch, as the peach undertone instantly color corrects for even skin tone on the affected areas.” Self-tanners can sometimes help, too, according to Yates. She says, “Lighter skin tones are often more susceptible to showing spider veins. To combat this, I suggest using self-tanner, as it’ll give you a healthy-looking bronzed glow that will make it harder to spot them.”
