Move Over Diamonds, Crystals Are A Girl’s New Best Friend

4th Jun 2019

I don’t know about you, but summer is my favorite time of the year for beauty looks. There’s just something about radiant, sun-kissed skin that exudes an air of effortless confidence. And if you’re anything like me, a summer makeup routine tends to be more light-handed (and less complicated), allowing for a quicker application – a godsend for busy women and men who want to look polished in a pinch. But there's one thing that can quickly put a damper on achieving that coveted summer glow. A little too much glow (or should we say oiliness) in the t-zone.

What is the t-zone?

The t-zone consists of the forehead, nose and chin area, which according to beauty expert and founder of Colour Collective, Kerry Yates contains a higher concentration of sebaceous glands (aka what makes your skin secrete its naturally occurring oils). Yates says, “As a result, you’re usually oilier in this area in comparison to the rest of your face. However, an overproduction of oil in the t-zone can be caused by environmental changes or an overzealous cleansing routine.” Celebrity makeup artist Mary Irwin adds, “Excess oil in the t-zone can take a little bit of investigating to figure out why you’re feeling greasy. You could naturally be oilier or live in a super humid climate. Seasonal changes can affect the area, too.”

Don’t strip skin of its natural oils

While excess oil in the t-zone can sometimes be unavoidable, there are ways to combat or, at least, lessen its effects with skincare. Yates says, “Don’t overdo it with the cleansing and be sure to use the right skincare products. Keep exfoliation to a minimum of one to two times a week. Over-exfoliating can lead your skin to think it is dry, which then encourages the sebaceous glands to produce more oil.” Echoing that sentiment, Irwin adds, “A gentle cleanser, an oil-control toner, and a light-weight or oil-free moisturizer can help to regulate and balance out your skin.”

Go with a matte finish

In terms of a makeup base, Yates says, “Stick with a matte foundation if you’re more oily prone. You don’t want anything that has a luminescent effect, as it’ll create more shine.” For added oil-proofing, translucent powder is a must. Yates says, “If you have a super shiny areas, I suggest taking a micro-fiber sponge, dotting with powder, and applying it directly to the face, just like you would with your blotting sheets. Then taking a powder brush, swipe away the excess.”
