Spring Skin: Transition Your Routine for Warmer Weather!

Spring Skin: Transition Your Routine for Warmer Weather!

Raise your hand if you love spring! Warmer weather, oversized sunglasses, and sun-kissed skin are so close you can almost smell the sunscreen. Not only does the end of winter offer us an excuse to pull out our favorite sandals, but it also gives us a chance to do some spring cleaning of our skincare routines.

Personally, I like to go through my medicine cabinet and makeup bag every spring and toss everything that’s expired. Old skincare and makeup can collect bacteria, which can lead to breakouts and even infections. No thanks!

Not sure where to start? Here are some general guidelines for when to throw out your beauty products:

  • mascara: 3 to 6 months
  • cream or liquid-based makeup (like foundation and concealer): 6 months - 1 year
  • powder makeup: 2 to 3 years
  • lip products (excluding lip balm): 2 to 3 years
  • lip balm: 1 year
  • cleansers: 1 year
  • toners: 6 months - 1 year
  • moisturizers and serums: 6 months - 1 year

Another helpful way to determine the life expectancy of a product after it has been opened is to check the PAO (Product After Opening) symbol. This symbol is usually found on the back of your beauty products, along with the number of months the products can be opened before it expires. It usually looks like the symbol below:

Now that you have cleaned out your skincare stash, let’s talk about the kinds of products you should be stocking for spring and summer. Similar to packing for a tropical getaway mid-winter, your cosmetic bag should contain products that can handle more humidity and sun. Leave your dry winter skin behind and revamp your routine with these spring skincare tips.

Exfoliate Away Winter Skin

From harsh winter winds to the drying effects of indoor heating, your skin has been through a lot during the cold winter months. Despite your best efforts to stay hydrated, you may feel like there’s still a layer of dry, tight skin even as spring approaches.

Step into your spring skincare routine by using physical exfoliators, such as a brush, or your own favorite DIY exfoliator, as well as a week of chemical exfoliating masks every other day to resurface winter skin. After exfoliating, replenish with the Resurface Rose Stem Cell Reconstructing Serum to help stimulate your skin's protein protection and boost facial skin stem cell activity. Groundbreaking alp rose stem cell extract also helps soothe visible redness making this a crucial step after bringing fresh sensitive skin to the surface with exfoliation.

Protect Skin With More Than SPF

While sunscreen is a staple of spring and summer, your skin should also be primed for more sunshine and higher humidity before the SPF is applied. After treating your skin with your serum, apply Resilient Rose Stem Cell Regenerating Treatment both day and night. The alpine rose stem cells in the rich cream help the skin’s barrier to protect itself against changes in temperature, UV exposure, and humidity, leaving your skin soft and ready for anything. Bring on the warm weather!

Go for the Aloe

Part of your spring skincare routine should include preparation for summer months and incorporating aloe into your regimen is a great way to do just that. Not only does aloe soothe sun damage, but when used as a healing mask, it can clear the skin and reduce inflammation. Plus, aloe provides lightweight hydration for the skin, which we all need on more humid days.

An easy way to start using aloe in your regime is to create your own aloe vera toner. Mix 2/3 cup of distilled water with 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel for a soothing, hydrating layer your skin will love.

Always Apply Eye Cream

Spring to me means finally getting some well-deserved sunshine after a long, gloomy winter. While I can't wait to bask in the newly found rays, it's important not to forget that a sunny day can put you at risk for developing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. To minimize this risk, make sure that utilizing an eye cream is a daily step in your spring skincare routine.

Dermelect’s Revitalite Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector Professional Strength is a 5-in-1 advanced eye treatment that works to address all of the concerns people have about their eyes and decrease the look of puffiness, dark circles, and under eye bags that frequently plague the eye area. With one application it works to firm and tighten the appearance of drooping skin on the eyelids. This treatment is perfect for the warmer months because of its soothing cool tip applicator, which helps to increase circulation resulting in instant rejuvenation.

Use Mattifying Products to Prevent Oily Skin

Our skin is ever changing and will often shift depending on countless factors, especially climate and humidity. If you're like me, the transition into spring can leave you with more shine and oil production then you'd like. Your spring skincare line-up should include products that will help your skin shine the right way by mattifying areas of your face that could become overly oily. To repress unwanted shine, apply Pore Revolution & T-Zone Mattifier either before or after makeup. Not only does this product help to mask shine, but it also helps to reduce the appearance of large, clogged pores with a combination of the best natural and lab-derived ingredients. Spring skin should be just like the season itself - light, easy and glowing!
